RNAV Course

The successful introduction of Basic Area Navigation (B-RNAV) in 1998 has provided enhanced capacity and flexibility in the ECAC en-route environment. It is the European first step towards the ICAO global plan of Required Navigational Performance Area Navigation (RNP RNAV). What are RNAV and RNP? How do they affect operators and Service Providers? This course clarifies these terms and their specific requirements. It highlights the limitations of conventional navigation and considers the medium and long-term future of terrestrial navigation aids.

GNSS Course

The EUROCONTROL Institute of Air Navigation Services currently offers 2 different GNSS courses:

  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems – European Applications (GNSS-EUR)

The GNSS course is designed for anyone wishing to have a broad understanding of how satellite positioning works, its current limitations and what the future may bring. There is a full review of satellite augmentations and the course ends with a view of future GNSS developments including a discussion on GALILEO. GNSS-EUR is a 3 day course designed to review current GNSS activities and then to specifically concentrate on the advances made by the Europeans. This course aims to study the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), Ground Based Augmentation Systems (GBAS) and GALILEO (the future European Satellite system).

ATC Training Support for TMA RNAV

AREA NAVIGATION IN EUROPEAN TERMINAL CONTROL AREAS (TMAs) has been developed by EUROCONTROL as generic training support material to enable controllers to understand the implementation and use of area navigation (RNAV) in the departure and arrival phases of flight. This package will be supplemented by local ATC training, which will highlight specific local implementation factors and issues.  However, the content of this package will provide all stakeholders with a good understanding of P-RNAV and its use in Terminal airspace.

SBAS and GBAS Data Evaluation using PEGASUS

The PEGASUS tool has been developed by EUROCONTROL for data evaluation in support of stakeholder activities to validate the performance of SBAS and GBAS systems. To learn how to use this extensive toolset, a training course and Tutorial material have been produced. The training course is held on demand with an Agenda adapted to the participants needs and the tutorial introduces the typical tasks, such as static and flight data evaluation, report generation and error simulation. Please refer to the PEGASUS page  for more information. The LATO OneSky team allows access to the tool, the tutorial and sample data sets.

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Training Course

This training module, for Airspace Planners, Procedure Design staff, Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff, Aircraft Operators (AOs) and other Aviation Personnel, is an overview of Performance Based Navigation (PBN).

The module supports the 'Performance Based Navigation Manual' (Final Draft), which replaces the 'Manual on Required Navigation Performance (RNP) International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Doc 9613-AN/937'.
