Galileo

Galileo is the future European satellite navigation system and is planned to be operational by 2013. It will include a global constellation of thirty satellites, distributed over three planes in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

The availability of an additional satellite constellation and additional GNSS signals offers significant benefits to aviation in terms of improved performance and robustness which may enable the withdrawal of much of the current ground-based navigation infrastructure.  These benefits include, amongst others, resistance to unintentional interference, greater availability of satellites, robustness to control segment failures, improved availability and continuity.
